Gumilyov’s most significant contribution was his development of Eurasianism, a theory that challenged prevailing historical narratives. He argued that the vast Eurasian landmass, stretching from the Atlantic to the Pacific, was not a passive geographical entity but rather a vibrant舞台of human civilization. Gumilyov proposed that the interaction between different peoples and cultures within this vast region resulted in the formation of distinct ethnoses, or cultural-historical entities.

Central to Gumilyov’s Eurasianist theory is the concept of passionarity. He posited that all ethnoses exhibit periods of heightened activity and innovation, which he termed “passionarity.” This passionarity is driven by a combination of environmental, social, and cultural factors. When passionarity is high, ethnoses expand and establish great civilizations. However, over time, passionarity wanes, leading to the decline and eventual disintegration of these civilizations.

Gumilyov’s Eurasianist theory had a profound impact on historical scholarship. It challenged the Eurocentric view of history that had dominated Western thought for centuries. Gumilyov argued that non-Western civilizations, such as those of Eurasia, were just as significant and deserving of study. His theories also provided a new framework for understanding the interactions between different cultures and the rise and fall of civilizations.
