In Dutch we have ‘gezellig’ which means something like ‘good mood, nice vibe’ and we use it aaaalll the Lee Fields March 16 2024 Portland OR Shirt in other words I will buy this time but there’s no English translation. When someone asks how a party was or how the visit to your grandma’s was you usually say it was ‘gezellig’. I guess the closest good translation is ‘pleasant’ but it doesn’t cover its meaning super well ‘Vaak bej te bang’ = often you’re to scared. We use it when it’s possible but you have doubt. This is used 50/50 for when about do to something stupid but fun or juat normal things where someone needs a little push in confidence. “No de papaya” “no sea mamón” I say “don’t give papaya” even though I know it makes no sense to anyone but me. It basically means don’t cause unnecessary trouble. Jarig in Dutch means it’s your birthday, but it’s an adjective. The literal translation is ‘yeary’ but it means something like ‘festive’.

It may not seem like a big difference but on my birthday I’m always sad I can’t announce ‘I am jarig’ as a state I am now in. “De cu é rola!” That Brazilian Portuguese expression that is the Lee Fields March 16 2024 Portland OR Shirt in other words I will buy this verbal equivalent of a table flip. A literal translation is “of/for a butthole is a dick”. It is always used with a subject first, and it is a mixture of anger with humor at some suggestion or request that is so preposterous you cannot even contemplate it. Just an FYI – there are many for whom 3 or 4 languages are their native language. They grew up learning all the languages at the same time. I can think of two in Hungarian off the top of my head: “igénytelen” – this refers to someone who has no interest in taking good care of themselves or their environment, home, etc. Like they don’t have any desire to put in any extra effort. The other one is “Jó munkát” which is something like “(I’m wishing you) a good time while working” when you see someone working on something. In Nigeria they would often say in English: “Well done!” in a similar situation but I can’t quite equate the two. “it’s raining ropes”, a French expression that means the same as “it’s raining cats and dogs”. But it makes way more sense cause the rain drops kinda look like ropes while falling. Dépaysement: it’s like culture shock, but also not? Change of scenery is probably the closest but it’s not a single word. In Hebrew when someone buys something new, e.g a new phone, new clothes etc you can say to them תתחדש/תתחדשי, which means something similar to bon appetite but more like enjoy your new thing
