Someone refused to accept one once and I didn’t know what to do… We got an influx of fake Scottish notes so managers had to check all of them. And I think that as they have 3 or 4 different banks that print their own notes none of the retail staff knew how to spot fakes confidently. There’s 3, Bank of Scotland, Royal Bank of Scotland, and Clydesdale. People outside of Scotland basically don’t have a clue at what they’re looking for, and lots don’t realise there’s multiple banks and designs which really throws them if you try giving them two different tenners.

Probably a bit of a red herring if you can use note checking pens and look for security features but I think it is a bit unnerving because we’re so used to the familiar appearance of the English versions. Back in the 90s I got a Scottish £10 from a family member, no shop would take it. Saved it and was able to spend it in Southport fair. I was only small but thought it weird that shops wouldn’t, but the stalls at the fair had no issues. It doesn’t help that there are 3 Scottish banks that issue notes (as well as 3 Northern Irish ones), so these are all different, but all are valid in UK. Unlike Gibraltar and Manx pounds or the ones from different channel Islands which aren’t valid in UK despite looking similar. This reminds me of the employees in Tesco where they will ask 70 year old women for ID for buying painkillers or whatever. They don’t want to take the risk on “Challenging anyone appearing under 25” so they just ask every single person, no cut off for bald, grey or zimmer frames as no doubt they’ve been bollocked for serving someone they clearly thought was old enough in the past.
