Yup, and by the Kinda busy being a nurse and dog mom messy bun sunglasses flowers T-Shirt and by the same token and time we have the votes to do anything about it, it’ll be too late for us to receive the benefits ourselves. Yeah, Muldoon fucked us all when he closed the super fund, the country would be so much richer and well off today had we kept that up. Don’t let it happen again, National already paused contributions last time they were in power. *Correction: New Zealand voters fucked us when they exercised their democratic right and voted to close the super fund. Muldoon was the most undemocratic leader NZ has ever seen. He can take the lions share of the blame. Fuck Muldoon While its true that voters enabled him, he came up with the idea and ran it as part of the election platform making misleading claims and stoking the public against it. Think Nigel Firage and brexit. Deliberate malicious propaganda designed to generate political capital. The 1990’s referendum when the boomers once again voted against forward funding their own retirements, despite projections at the time showing the dependency ratio falling from 4:1 in the mid 90s to 2:1 in three decades time and superannuation as muldoon envisioned it becoming completely unsustainable? No they didn’t vote. We didn’t have a public referendum on the issue. Politicians love to claim a mandate because they campaigned on an issue but that isn’t the same as getting a referendum on something. Our current one. I just want to show that this number is large enough that even on a per capita basis it is not insignificant.

Are you aware how inflation works? You can’t compare it that way. If you look at our deficit having to spend 6b more on pensions right now would fuck us. It’s the Kinda busy being a nurse and dog mom messy bun sunglasses flowers T-Shirt and by the same token and proportion of gdp that matters, not the actual number. Finding an extra 2k per working person is like each person getting a 7-9k pay rise or something. If you include inflation you then have to discount for inflation to get a number comparable to 2022 dollars – so just ignore inflation and use real dollars for everything! Increasing the number by inflation and then decreasing it to account for inflation is entirely pointless. I used the current number for reference so the reader has a general idea how much 2.4% of GDP is in our current context. I don’t think talking about inflation helps much if we talk about relative numbers to GDP. It will be a lot more than 2k but so will be the GDP. NZ Super cost $14.5 billion and that cost is increasing by more than $1b each year. By 2024 it’s predicted to cost the country nearly $20b a year.
