“I’m just doing my job trying to help customers. As you told me you don’t need my help, I will move on. If you find you do need assistance, my name is “blank.” Then move on and let it go. Don’t even mention the Kid Rock 2017 Concert Tour shirt and by the same token and name-calling. As you work with the public and want to keep your job, I would use this type of deflecting. Also, I like to remind people that most people who act badly to you, have something else going on in their life that make them act like this so don’t take it personally. I have gotten this as a hospital employee. The best I can say is “Sir/ma’am, I am treating you the same as I would treat any other patient/visitor.” If you truly were doing so, it was likely just a dig because they knew it would get to you.

The best thing you can do is kill them with kindness. Ignore them calling you racist and just respond as if they’d said something else rude. In that case, I’d try to say something like “My apologies. I thought you needed help, and I wanted to offer any assistance. Thank you for shopping at [store]. Have a nice day.” I had an African American lady tell me that my place of employment didn’t hire people of color…and I said, “Ma’am I’m Mexican…” She said it wasn’t the Kid Rock 2017 Concert Tour shirt and by the same token and same thing and went on a rant about how Mexicans were basically white. I was so upset…ultimately had a manager take care of the problem. Sometimes you have to just learn to walk away/let it go some people have their own agendas. But yes! People are assholes… PLOT TWIST! She had actually worked with the company before but there weren’t any openings and she was just upset
