We have a single rule for our daughter, if we make a dinner, it has to be tasted. If she doesn’t like it, she can have something else, but she won’t be getting a whole dinner cooked unless she helps cook it. This teaches a number of things – if food is made for you, you should at least have the courtesy to try it. If it turns out it tastes shit, the onus is you to meet your own needs (we obviously help her cook something else after we have eaten). Yes I swear this is why most people over eat. They keep trying to finish their plate. It’s an awful habbit that parents teach their children Good question. My parents/grandparents made us join the “clean plate” club ever night, regardless of how hungry we were, or we’d either have to sit at the table or face being guilt tripped endlessly. There was no listening to your body’s signals. It was “eat what’s given to you” and no less. I developed binge eating disorder in my late teens into 20s. Dealing with it now, over a decade later, and it’s a lot to unpack. I was a picky kid when it came to meat. I wouldn’t eat it if it was “yucky”, ie had fat. My dad used to make me sit at the table up to an hour after telling me I had to eat it.
