A bad manager is a little black cloud that follows you around. Money helps but that black cloud sucks until it’s gone. Managers can really make or break a job even when everything else is good. If this person would have been your manager, and raised red flags from the get-go, you did the right thing by declining the position. I once had a job interview with a very nice director, and a manager who was a complete micro-managing knob head. He stood over me in the company kitchen (pre-interview) and micro-managed me making myself a cup of tea, telling me when to pull the teabag out and how much milk to put in. Partway through the technical test, where he constantly interrupted me by saying things like “I don’t like those variable names! Change them now! What are you waiting for?” “I would not have called that array by that name. Change it to this name instead”. I paused the technical test and asked him if he would be my direct report. He said yes. I sat down and said that I had changed my mind and was no longer interested in the role. The interview ended at that point.
