The scale of this? Over 21,000 in the last few years. Most of them are going to the west coast. San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland. 21,000 might not sound like a lot, but it really is when homeless are typically only a tiny fraction of the total population. Downtown San Diego has turned into a tent city as a result and Portland has many streets you can’t even walk on the sidewalk anymore because tents cover the entire span. They build shelters and safe camping areas, but they also impose rules like “you can’t use drugs here”. So, they sit empty while the streets of downtown are clogged up and getting worse.
