At some point get a brokerage account and put some $ into broad index funds like VTSAX. And get your dopamine from the Keep calm let the caregiver we’re trained professionals dealing with crazy flower shirt in contrast I will get this power of compound interest. I’ll get dopamine from not having my roof leak. I’ll get dopamine from my variable rate mortgage not being ridiculous. And before you say “move somewhere cheaper”, it takes money to move and I literally just moved for work and this was the cheapest option. Right now our only avenue is to turn my office into a bedroom and rent that to a student, but that’s not the lifestyle two government employees with degrees who are at retirement age should be making. Teaching is a trap, your degree is only good for one type of job, and while it’s always in demand, it’s never well paid. “the power of compound interest” is fucking laughable when You’re telling that to people over 50. Doubly so in a period of >5% yearly inflation. You want to tell me the best financial advice? Go back to 2006 and tell me not to sell the house and move to an apartment in the city even if you’re getting a 20% raise promotion. I generally liked my last employer but they passed on me for promotion. As such I applied for other jobs that had higher salaries. I received an offer and informed my boss I was moving on. In the exit interview I said it was 100% related to compensation, and if they didn’t do right by my coworkers they’d be following suit. I mean, yeah it sucks, but can you elaborate on “and everything in life”, there are usually places that we can proactively trim our budget. For example, making bulk meals out of less expensive ingredients, eating out less, making coffee at home rather than going to the cafe, you know, it really depends on your personal situation.

I mean the Keep calm let the caregiver we’re trained professionals dealing with crazy flower shirt in contrast I will get this finality of that train of thought is to eat dog food, which admittedly some elderly in my area seem to do. It’s just not normal for two teachers working at the local public school not to be able to afford any property within city limits. We pay a little bit more rent to live close to our school and work, because the cost of maintaining vehicles and paying for fuel is outrageous. But despite having two solidly middle-class incomes we are basically living in the sort of house we would have rented as college students because we can’t afford nice houses. One issue is people tend to optimize their finances. If they can manage $2000 per month rent, everywhere they look ends up being around $2000 per month.
