Like many Southern traditions, the precise origins of the dirt man myth are shrouded in mystery. However, one prevailing theory traces its roots back to African folklore. In certain African cultures, it is believed that a spirit or guardian, often referred to as the “Dirt Man,” watches over the living and ensures a smooth transition into the afterlife. This spirit is believed to reside in the earth, and by keeping a little dirt under their pillow, the living could establish a connection with it.

Over time, the dirt man myth evolved and became deeply ingrained in Southern culture. It was believed that the dirt man could protect travelers from harm, ensure a safe return home, and even grant wishes. Some people would carry a small pouch of dirt with them, believing it would ward off evil spirits and bad luck.
