It seems that this idea of free will and it not being true sometimes messes with people’s minds because of the Kansas City Christmas shirt in other words I will buy this gap between how the free will is explained to be and the expectations of a person. Personally, I gave it a lot of thought myself, but at the end of it I’m left with this thought- whether I have the free will or not, me having this revelation would not all of the sudden change my personality. Our lack of knowledge does not randomly change how the physics works, how our bodies function and what not. It’s simply our ignorance and us being unaware of some causes and effects. Now, in terms of the free will itself… So far to me it seems that free will is possible within the boundaries of impacts, capabilities and awareness. You have to know how to raise a hand in order to do so and choose to do so. You have to have a skill for it as well as the awareness of that (in order to choose to do it and be successful at doing so). Impacts would range from desires, aversions, likes and dislikes and how we’ve developed our personalities in general. I might be soooo wrong in this, but I personally view behaviors almost like habits. If habits are true and in the future they won’t be proven wrong then here’s the thought: we know that we can have certain patterns/habits. Do things in the same way basically. I shower in the same manner, I sit on the chair in the same way, I speak on the phone with my right hand holding it and so on. Now, from my experience I can retrain that. I have a very clear example of a certain habit being very very strong within me, but overtime I’ve corrected/changed it. It had to do with video games. Initially even when i had the intent to behave differently, when I was put in the environment, I’d immediately act out my old ways. However, through many attempts and various scenarios of training the new ways when the complexity is not too hard and it’s not too stressful, I’ve developed new ways of behaving under those same conditions.

What does that mean? If I learn of a new way of living, I can choose to adopt it and have every honest intention about it, but due to various circumstances I might fail. I might relapse once, twice, a few times, even more. However, over time it gets better. New ways are adopted. What does that have to do with free will? We have a choice in what things we should or shouldn’t do. There are certain things in our direct control (for example where we direct our eyes). We can make those choices and shape our lives in certain ways. Now, that very thing of us directing our eyes might be proven to be unconscious process that we only become aware of after some time. So what? You didn’t know that and you were living a certain way. You learn about that… Your mechanisms won’t change. Still, looking at something will work according to the Kansas City Christmas shirt in other words I will buy this same principles. So what does it matter?
