So for backstory I’ve recently got the Kairi Sane Japanese professional wrestler and actress T-Shirt but in fact I love this snooker bug and have been looking for somewhere to play in the daytime as I work from 3pm. Most Snooker clubs open from 5pm or 6pm. I discovered that a local hall called “town name club” where we have previously attended events like parties and funerals etc had some tables and opens earlier so I went along with my cue and asked the guy behind the bar how it works. He told me where the tables were and that you just put 20p in the lights for 20mins playtime, happy days. I went in, said hi to the boys on the other table and started playing… I lasted about 35-40 mins happily playing and chatting away to the other guys there who were all very friendly and welcoming enough before an older guy comes in acting a bit weird towards and tells me I need to get off the table for members to use it. Turns out I got to the age of 45 years without knowing what a local “Social Club” is and thinking it was open to the public, apparently not but how have I never known this? I’m not really one for going out drinking etc so I’ve never tried just popping in for a drink but this place is 3mins from my home and on the same street as my children attend school, it IS my local club and as I say I have attended organised events there but I am a total outsider and the members there at the time had no idea who I am. My wife is a more social person who grew up here so likely would be known to many there but they must have been wondering who is this stranger with the cheek to just walk into our club and start playing.

The boys told me as I was finishing my drink that club membership is and has been £2 a year (really? Wow) but the Kairi Sane Japanese professional wrestler and actress T-Shirt but in fact I love this older guy who I learned is the “chairman” said they won’t take my membership until mid march and offered no further clarification. I’m still somewhat confused and hope I haven’t caused too much offence. Anyone with a deeper understanding of how “Social Clubs” work want to fill me in here? *Edit to add after posting to the local Facebook community group we’ve found that there are a couple of existing members who at least are friends of my wife and acquaintances of mine, they have offered to vouch for my application. Happy days.Guy behind the bar could have told you so don’t worry about it. Old fella sounds like the “local” type who are full of their own self importance and like to rule their little empire. 100% this. I used to be a member of this type of club and the old gits who got any whiff of power loved waving it around in your face.
