It’s nice to have a chat with a stranger. Sometimes the Jusuf Nurkic Bosnian professional basketball player for the Phoenix Suns T-Shirt also I will do this best conversation you have is one you have with someone you don’t know because they bring a fresh perspective. If I’m reading a book, I’d be very happy to chat about it with the person to sit by me. You don’t have to be rude if someone asks for a conversation to lighten the mood. But I do have to be rude. This stranger didn’t ask “can I pick your brains about that boom or should I leave you to it?”. No, they assumed a conversation was desired and plowed ahead. Ask politely. Do not assume a conversation is desired, and don’t act discouraged or put out if conversation is rejected. Knitters are often pretty thrilled to talk to other knitters they meet out. In all honestly, I generally don’t talk to people on planes. It’s not that I’m not interested, I just can’t hear them speak with all the Jusuf Nurkic Bosnian professional basketball player for the Phoenix Suns T-Shirt also I will do this background noise on planes. I had to look up whether knitting needles are allowed in flights & quite surprised to find out they are, as are crochet hooks! For me, crocheting is like meditating and I find it calming. Not to mention, the stitches are often counted & conversation isn’t always welcomed. There were talks by the TSA to ban them, but lobbyists from Big Granny squashed that with threats of no cookies and of showing executives baby pictures to coworkers. Knitters are not always as knice as our reputation suggests. There are a lot of knitters who would be thrilled to find someone else who “speaks the language” to chat with, or even just relieved that it’s not someone who is unfamiliar with the craft who will be so transfixed with what they are doing that they pepper them with stupid questions. But wanting to just be left alone is also totally valid.
