I’ve been job searching basically nonstop for eight years, only slowing down when I’m settling into something new or when the Just A Girl Who Loves Fall and Midshipmen Peanuts Cartoon Halloween Shirt and by the same token and world shut down about three years ago for some reason. Depends on where you are at. There are plenty of jobs in Canada where you can make that or more in USD with less than 2 weeks training. Mind you most of those jobs being pretty hard work. In construction there are opportunities starting out to earn that much and much more the more experienced you are. Average means mixing liberal arts degrees with the engineering, accounting and IT degrees. Most liberal arts degrees will earn a lot less Maybe it’s all based on his experience? I mean you can be a cop and get close to that figure starting out. BUT I’m guessing he’s not considering that type of work $60k isn’t difficult to make if you are in the right place, the job market is good and you have a skill set that people are willing to pay for. Teaching in Louisiana, the most I made was $29.5k. Teaching in Maryland my highest salary was $85k. I know other teachers who were making $100k+. “Pretty unlikely straight out of school unless you go through certain, generally difficult, programs?” That’s absolutely true. “Very hard to achieve ever in your life?” Not so much. It takes time, and regularly upskilling and changing jobs, but it’s not particularly challenging. I finally got my degree (in my late 30s) a few years ago, and almost immediately got promoted to a position where I make 50k (plus around 15k more in profit sharing and company stock). I could likely make more elsewhere, but I really like my team and my benefits.

That’s why it looks so impossible when you’re stuck in those jobs where they pay you less. About to be 43. One BA, one BSc. I make $58k. It’s the most I’ve ever made and I’ve had the job less than a year. I live in a very large city, not in a flyover state. My husband is 54. He’s ABD on his PhD and is making the most he’s ever made, at $53k. Our student loans are more than half our combined income. School did not pay off for us. My husband doesn’t have a bachelor’s degree and we’ve lived in Oregon and Rhode Island. He’s worked in Massachusetts also. His remote employer is currently based out of Arizona. He has over 15 years of Financial aid/management experience and is just now making about 65k. And that’s a lot for his line of work. Even with his level of experience it’s impossible for him to move up without a degree. More places should take experience in lieu of education. My work does year for year. Like, two years experience and a bachelor’s degree or six years experience.
