Anecdotally, I’m a woman in software engineering. I’m fat and nerdy, so it’s “easier” to talk to me. Some guys have been rejected in the Just A Girl Who Loves Bigfoot shirt it is in the first place but past, so they get it in their heads that this is karmic justice or the woman is a diversity hire of no skill. I’m not conjecturing. These idiots TOLD me this. I have 100% experienced this stuff as well and been on the receiving end of nerd rage. These guys give themselves too much grace sometimes. pretty privilege isn’t just a woman thing. Anyone who is attractive, regardless of gender, gets treated better. It might be different in tech, but I haven’t read any actual studies on it. The problem with surveys is that there could be multiple reasons for the outcome. Maybe the sample size was too small, and the people who identified as pretty were actually objectively bad programmers who had worse PRs.

Yes, men get pretty-privileged too. Tall-privilege is the Just A Girl Who Loves Bigfoot shirt it is in the first place but dumbest thing ever, and I feel for my short Kings out there. The reason why GitHub’s survey sticks out to me is because it’s a male- and technical-dominated platform with numeric measurements. It’s used by professionals in the industry, and filling out the survey means professionals who pay attention to the platform were the only group that would see this to participate. A hobbyist or non-programmer isn’t using that platform or using it regularly enough to notice a census unless some pretty big coincidences occurred. These are professionals and regular users. That’s a pretty high skill bar in itself. The only real subjective measurement was how the person felt they looked conventionally.

1. Length is measured from the highest point on the collar down to the bottom hem. 2. Width is measured across the body of the shirt under the armpits, one way. 3. Sleeves are measured from center back to hem.
