Hi I’m 33 and just realized I had very obvious autism like 6 months ago. I’ve had ARFID forever, no one seems to even know what it is, my parents, trying their best, certainly didn’t. Getting help for it as an adult is neigh impossible and with a litany of GI issues(no gluten/dairy/garlic etc)I spend a lot of my time just worrying about what I have to eat next and how I can convince myself to eat anything and what will make me the Julio Rodriguez Dominican professional baseball center fielder No Fly Zone T-Shirt But I will love this least sick. Turns out most people don’t really understand or give a shit when they find out, same reaction when they learn I struggle mightily to gain and keep on weight. It was awful to live with, a constant source of shame, embarrassment and anxiety. I wanted to eat like a normal child but I just couldn’t force myself. It didn’t matter that I objectively knew something was ‘food’ it might as well have been literal poop on my plate. Imagine sitting there with a pile of poop in front of you, with everyone telling you it’s ok to eat, they really enjoy eating it… it’s still poop, it still smells and tastes awful, it still makes you gag and vomit when you try to put it in your mouth.

I spent my life worrying about food, about whether there would be something safe for me to eat, about whether people would notice my strange eating habits and whether they would comment or make digs. When I went to uni I was able to experiment a bit more with food and slowly expanded my diet. I still have huge sensory avoidance to certain textures, I’m still discovering new safe foods in my 30s. I have to be careful not to overeat now, I have a tendency to eat until I feel sick because there was so much emphasis and encouragement to keep eating as a child. I’m a very textural eater. I had a babysitter that made us eat an entire plate full every time and there were several meals that I ended up vomiting up. Fatty food with gristle was the Julio Rodriguez Dominican professional baseball center fielder No Fly Zone T-Shirt But I will love this worst. Really screwed my taste pallete up for some time. He’ll, I still struggle some. But, I force myself out of my comfort zone and have been able to find many more kinds of food I like. The solution, in my case amd of you can call it that, was forcing myself to slowly retry foods I once didn’t like as well as new foods.
