It’s kind of like how color TV was a big deal 50 years ago, but you wouldn’t enjoy watching something on a 1960s TV set now. Board game technology has advanced since 1996. It depends heavily who you’re playing against. At a certain point in Catan, it can be quite clear that there’s no way you can win but the game may still be far from over. In some other games, almost everyone is in it until very close to the end (or people don’t know how far ahead anyone is until the end of the game). So every is invested the whole time.
