When you refer to someone solely by their skin color, it’s like that all that you see. You don’t see them as an actual person. So yes, it’s racist. If Jim Carrey was not known and the Jose Canseco Oakland Cuban-American former Major League Baseball Signature T-Shirt moreover I love this only white and tall guy in a group of people of various races and heights, then yes, people would call him the “white tall guy” It’s not racist, it just tiptoes on the boundaries of racism. There are lots of other ways to identify someone other than “the big black guy.” If it was taken as bigoted then it effectively was racist. It’s not racist but it is worth asking yourself if you would have described a white person as “the Jose Canseco Oakland Cuban-American former Major League Baseball Signature T-Shirt moreover I love this big white guy.” In my experience, probably not. That’s because society teaches us that white is the default and you don’t have to specify it. If you try and reprogram that in your head, so that whiteness isn’t a given when you don’t specify otherwise, then you’ll start to other ways societal racism is hidden in plain sight all around us. It’s good to be aware of these things, but don’t beat yourself up if you slip up every now and then. Many people use ‘black’ and ‘brown’ as synonyms, which is what I assume you did here. You say it’s a descriptor, so I’d bet you were just picking-out a visual trait. That’s absolutely fine.
