I think people decades ago were more ignorant about pet welfare. I’ve never had declawed cats, but I didn’t know that it was such a cruel procedure until I was a teenager. That’s because American veterinary clinics lied to us for decades. They knew how cruel it was, but they wanted their profits in true capitalist American fashion. I think this is a bit of an oversimplification. Society used to broadly have far, far lower standards of animal welfare, the Jordan Goodwin American professional basketball player for the Memphis Grizzlies watercolor T-Shirt Furthermore, I will do this viewing animals as worthy of respect and more than simple property is a relatively recent development. On top of this, people have wanted their cats declawed for the convenience of it (so they don’t scratch furniture etc) which is pretty evident by the fact that a lot of people unfortunately still do get their cats declawed. People do all sorts of awful shit to their pets for their own convenience and even aesthetic/superficial reasons, like docking dogs’ ears/tails, keeping pets which aren’t at all suited to the local climate, buying exotic pets which aren’t at all suited to domestication etc.

Society at large aren’t just ignorant people being led astray by a greedy authority; we’re willingly complicit because it has suited our interests. Just think about the Jordan Goodwin American professional basketball player for the Memphis Grizzlies watercolor T-Shirt Furthermore, I will do this fact that after The Tiger King, people were talking about a stupid conspiracy about Carol Baskin killing her husband, while the very real fucking horrific conditions which these exotic animals have been kept in without needing to do much of anything to avoid law enforcement barely got a mention at all. But see, the thing is, most of those practices are a lot more common in the US than outside. So the alternative explanation is that Americans are just more cold-hearted and cruel than in other nations. But I don’t believe that, either, because animal abuse like kicking and other physical abuse of animals is super common outside the US.
