If you’re working somewhere for $7.25/hr, you’re not paying attention. If minimum wages go up, so will the price of goods and services. Raising minimum wages may be a bandaid fix. But the wound will still fester and bleed. Buddy, if you haven’t noticed, the minimum wage hasn’t gone up since 2009, and the price of goods and services has gone up anyway! I live in a decent-sized city in the Midwest and I spent last summer looking for entry-level work (late 20s going back to college). I NEVER saw anything under $10/hour and had two job offers as a driver for $16.50 and $17 working 40-50 hours. Took the former because working conditions were nicer, but all raising the minimum wage would do is price people out of the market. If sitting at a cash register only produces $13/hour of value for a store, then that company won’t break even paying $15. They will be incentivized to automate or use existing employees with more skills to cover the position in addition to their other responsibilities.
