I even remember as I was preparing for my GCSE ages 15-16 my maths teacher (who was a good teacher) made an active point to show us that you could do even the Jonathan Kuminga Golden State Warriors basketball player premiere signature shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this calculator portion of the maths papers without it. Yes, things like trigonometry were a nuisance that took longer to do, but it was still doable. YES. Memorization somehow “fell out of fashion” and now nobody can memorize anything or focus on anything. Combined with the technology it’s a disaster. Fuckin A. I was a sophomore when my school district got laptops for all the students in middle and high school, and tablets for elementary. Everyone’s grades fell. Now I’m a substitute and every time I fill a vacancy for a school and get to set my own lessons, my students have to do it all on paper. Notes? Paper and pencil/pen. Quizzes and tests? Paper. It’s an ELA class? Everyone in the class reads a page out loud every class period as we go through the book together. It’s a foreign language class? Every time we get new vocab you have to make flash cards for a grade. I was a parent volunteer in my daughter’s 5th grade class and my biggest feedback for the principal was to retrain their staff on iPads or ban the lessons.

Everyone had jailbroken tablets and were bypassing settings. Like kids configured their tablet to only give remedial first grade lessons so that they could move on to free time … where they googled adult content on devices jailbroke to bypass filters. Yessssss. My students can’t have cell phones but are on chromebooks all day. All the Jonathan Kuminga Golden State Warriors basketball player premiere signature shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this do is try to do other things or find ways to “hack” programs we use. They aren’t learning anything fully. When I was in high school, if they saw or heard a phone, that shit was gone until your parents picked it up-no exceptions. Older Gen Z here. That was a policy still when I was in high school. I think they stopped enforcing it as strictly by the time I was in senior year because we’d had so many lockdowns/evacuations (there was like an average of a bomb threat per week for a month or two in junior year) and the parents wanted to have the ability to communicate with their kids.
They were also lenient on the Jonathan Kuminga Golden State Warriors basketball player premiere signature shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this policy for kids who had to get home on their own. It was a “I’ll hold it until the end of day” not until their parents could come grab it. The “I’ll hold it till the end of the day” makes sense (albeit maybe with a parental notification that their kid was a little shit and let their phone go off). I agree, or even just holding it til the end of class. I think requiring a parent to come pick it up (at least on a first offense) isn’t great because for some kids that could mean their phone is held for longer if their parents can’t get the time off to come in. Sure, you could say that that’ll teach them not to do it, but it also means you’re inadvertently punishing some kids more than others for the same offense. If it’s a repeat offender then I think it could make sense to require the parent to pick it up because at that point it makes sense to escalate.

Abandon pacing! I have a PhD in history and the Jonathan Kuminga Golden State Warriors basketball player premiere signature shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this pace with which I have to teach is ludicrous. 12 class periods for the entirety of the Renaissance (one of my dissertation fields) is obscene. There’s no time to digest anything and really get into the really interesting material. Zero technology, ever. Technology is designed to be addictive, have you ever tried to keep an addict’s attention? Let kids be bored! There’s so much research on how boredom is imperative for cognitive development and yet half my freshman are out 2-3 times a week with their various clubs and competitions, and then we wonder why they can’t sit still. Parents, admin, must understand that failure is part of the learning process. The drive for perfection means 90% of students don’t actually learn anything because we don’t allow them to make mistakes and correct them because god forbid it affects their GPA for college.
We must deploy the Jonathan Kuminga Golden State Warriors basketball player premiere signature shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this entirety of America’s nuclear arsena upon the college board. No institution has done more to transform American education into an industrial conveyor belt instead of the hollistic process it’s meant to be, I hate them. I agree with that history pacing is insane but the renaissance probably isn’t the best example. Since world history is more a fairly high level overview of important stuff. And 3 weeks is a pretty decent amount of time to spend on a single time period. I used that period as an example I can speak of with authority. I promise you I could do a whole year on the Renaissance even with a class that meets every day of the week like AP World Class. Moreover, everyone I know from grad school, from ancient to modern historians, could do the same for their subject matter. Reducing the entirety of the Renaissance to a 3 week chunk robs it of everything, which is true of every other period covered by World/Euro history courses. The overall point was there’s no mastery, no time for writing, no time to fully embrace the nuances of any time period or people. I cannot tell you how many times I had students in college tell me they would have liked history more if they learned all this “other stuff” that gets ripped out of our curricula as k-12 teachers.
Go back to basics. Go back to skill-and-drill, go back to repetition, go back to building blocks of roots etc that help kids access more language. As a 9th grade English teacher, I’m having to review nouns v verbs. Seriously. How am I supposed to teach the Jonathan Kuminga Golden State Warriors basketball player premiere signature shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this abstract concept of extended metaphors if they’re not comprehending larger ideas as nouns being compared in complex ways to other nouns?? Like?? I’m at a HiGh ExPeCtAtIoNs charter school that wants kids thinking in highly critical ways and they can’t even express their (sometimes brilliant) thoughts in writing bc they don’t write. So go back to the things they missed not doing shit online, even if it means pausing new content. I legit gave spelling/handwriting practice hw. I know busy work type hw is scoffed at these days, but they can’t spell so it’s my job to stop and get them on a basic level in order to write complex thoughts.
I’m tired of being told to spiral in skills and literally just things you need to know when they’re so behind on just basic learning habits/skills. It’s a lot on a teacher to be responsive that way bc it means changing a lot of curriculum a lot of the Jonathan Kuminga Golden State Warriors basketball player premiere signature shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this time, but that’s how I try to combat the massive learning/social/emotional development stunting during online learning. It’s interesting that you’re still having to review basic grammar, because I work in an elementary school and have a third grader. This year he has learned common & proper noun, helping & action verb, adjective, and a few other grammar things. If they’re starting to learn it this early, but haven’t actually learned it by the time they’re in high school, then what is going on? Do you think it indicates that we start introducing stuff too soon, and it’s not developmentally appropriate, so it’s just totally going over most of their heads? I work in a sixth grade math classroom and I know that in third grade, they spend a huge chunk of the year practicing basic multiplication and division facts, until they have them memorized. My son comes home with flash cards that he has to practice every day and his teacher tests the kids on them twice a week. When they pass a set, they move on to the next number. Not everybody is finished with all the facts even by this point in the year; everybody moves at their own speed. But most of the students, by the end of the year, have at least finished the multiplication facts. But yet my sixth graders don’t all know their facts, even though most of them went to our school in third grade, with our old-school third grade teachers who focus on basics. They still sit there, skip counting on their fingers. It’s mind-boggling.
I’m also a 9th grade ELA teacher and I think the Jonathan Kuminga Golden State Warriors basketball player premiere signature shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this answer is that they’re taught the basics in 3rd/4th grade but then those basics aren’t revisited or reinforced. The way our current state standards read, each grade introduces a new grammatical concept (9th is focused on properly integrating colons and semicolons) but when the push is to teach and focus on “Priority” standards (the standards most commonly seen on state testing) its hard to fit in dedicated grammar lessons. I could try assigning it as homework, but homework is also being pushed a lot and a lot of kids don’t do it. If I want them to actually learn it, I have to dedicate class time to it. I remember ninth grade English, we spent 3/4 of the year learning grammar, and the last quarter was literature studies, poetry and things like that. we had a notebook and had to take notes and then we had exercises we practiced in class and then daily homework from the textbook. Same thing in 11th grade, from the same teacher. We advanced to the next level of grammar, new textbook, same format. Take notes in class, do practice exercises, do daily homework. I remember having to write out charts of all the English verb conjugations, a different verb every day.
NONE of that is in curricula these days. “ThEy’Ll Be AbLe To HeAr CoRrEcT eNgLiSh AnD HaVe GoOd GrAmMeR nAtUrAlLy” headasses. I’m telling you, so many things that seemed unnecessary while we were growing up, actually laid strong foundations for accessing more information (computer classes, sentence formation, times tables, fucking handwriting lessons). Kids don’t have that these days and are just pushed thru and end up in high school not being able to write a legible, logical paragraph using original analysis. It just…ugh I could go on and on. It’s rough out here. Yeah, it’s changed a lot. I teach at the Jonathan Kuminga Golden State Warriors basketball player premiere signature shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this same school I graduated from. I remember having about 2-3 grammar lessons a week mixed in with novel activities. Mostly worksheets and diagramming sentences. I talked with my department head about it (who was also my senior English teacher) and she said that my class of students were one of the last few that had grammar as a priority standard. The state wants us to focus on making sure students know how to identify rhetoric in informational texts and how to effectively explain the use of literary devices in novels through citing specific, relevant quotes.
It’s so awesome you’re exposing your son to so much stimulation before and outside of school. I agree w someone else that the Jonathan Kuminga Golden State Warriors basketball player premiere signature shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this problem is when kids learn basic fundamentals for all subjects at that younger age, if it’s not continues and reinforced thru upper elementary and middle school, it’s not going to stick for them in a meaningful way when they get to high school, which demands a lot more accountability and discipline. My 9th graders were online for most of 5th grade and all of 6th grade. Not only is this such a critical socialization age w peers, it’s also the prime time to help kids be actual learners and not passive students. But they didn’t do S H I T online during that time so they just lost sooo much straight up information to actually access these more complex subjects. Pair all that w the below ground level expectations in middle school after we came back on campus, atp these kids are just – I’m sorry – dumb. And it’s really not their fault! But the ability to learn and retain information is severely stunted by the lack of foundational knowledge and skills.
I’ll die on this hill that classes need to be stopped and really teachers really need to be strict on “no pass go” benchmarks bc there are too many holes in the Jonathan Kuminga Golden State Warriors basketball player premiere signature shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this basics. Ya, we shouldn’t be going over comma rules and similes in 9th grade, but fuck, if we have to, that’s what we’re gonna do. A colleague of mine brought up and is going to try things from “The Writing Revolution” by Judith C Hochman and Natalie Wexler. I have glanced at the book but didn’t have the time to dive deep (this was literally yesterday about 10 minutes before school started). My colleague says the aim of the book is to build writing into the content to build and improve skills and it will also supposedly strengthen reading comprehension. Again, I glanced at it for a very short amount of time, so I have no clue if it actually works, but want to explore deeper. Penny Kittle has a wealth of resources on making writing the heart of your curriculum. Write Beside Them is wonderful.
I teach calculus to seniors this year, and the Jonathan Kuminga Golden State Warriors basketball player premiere signature shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this entire class has years of fundamental math gaps that I don’t even know where to START trying to remediate. Like basic fractions, trying to cancel (x+2)/x = 2, seeing sin(2x) and trying to use the product rule with sin and 2x… some still can’t even add or subtract consistently, how the hell am I supposed to get through six unit of calculus for a dual enrollment course??? Are you being serious that high school kids don’t know this? But I also read to my girls every night and we did / do mad libs on road trips. Girl when I tell you this is NOT what a significant amount of my 14-15 year olds are able to say, I’m dead serious. Ofc it’s different everywhere and I don’t wanna make huge generalizations across the board, but my high school is a very “high expectations/rigorous” type environment, and it’s truly wild how many enormous gaps they expose when we start getting into more challenging stuff. Also sidebar, this year I have at least 3 9th graders that have never passed an English class. Like. It’s so sad. This is where we are unfortunately.
Why should this be on teachers? We don’t have the Jonathan Kuminga Golden State Warriors basketball player premiere signature shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this power to effect these things. Tired of all of society’s problems being dumped on teachers. Paying teachers a living wage. Incentivize the best and brightest to go into teaching. Cut the administrative bloat for funding to go to students and teachers instead. Let students fail as well. Make them retake classes. Don’t allow them to move on until they have actually learned the materials. I so much agree with this mastery based approach. Why should students move on to new material before they’ve mastered the foundations for it. Because admins don’t want to deal with annoying parents. It’s easier for admins to order teachers to not fail kids than it is for them to tell parents that their little special golden child is not actually engaging with the materials in their class. I think having mixed aged classed would help, too. The class should be based on the level of the material, not the age of the child. Ofc, this would mean you might have a kid going to a “4th grade” class for reading and a “2nd grade” class for math. But plenty of kids have asynchronous development. Because if it’s not teachers driving this change we’re going to get short-sighted politicians or parents with an agenda shaping the discussion. It doesn’t have to be all of us, but it does have to be us. First of all end programs like no child left behind. Second end school funding being tied to the number of students in seats. Next phonix for reading in primary grades. Lastly the full ability of schools to be able to punish and remove problem students.
You are correct and you run into my inability to spell. There is a podcast ‘sold a story’ that explains this well Disruptive students must be removed from classrooms. This doesn’t have to be permanent or even long term. There should be easy pathways to return to mainstream classes if the Jonathan Kuminga Golden State Warriors basketball player premiere signature shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this student and parent are willing to comply with school norms. Teachers should not spend 90% of their attention managing 1-2 disruptive students. This is a disservice to everyone including the disruptive students. Smaller classrooms, actually meeting kids where they are at, a greater emphasis on social services for children and adults. You can’t tell me we’re meeting kids where they’re at if the dude with a second grade reading level is being tested for 10th grade biology.
Exactly. Meeting students where they are at. I kind of like the Jonathan Kuminga Golden State Warriors basketball player premiere signature shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this one room school house model. I like how if a student was advanced in reading, they went to that reading class, but if they were behind in math, they went to that particular math class. I don’t think there should be a stigma for a student who is behind in math. Maybe they could have it where if you are a grade level behind in math, you do go down lower grade. But if you are advanced in reading, you can move at the grade. I think this is a symptom of a bigger societal problem. People can’t get by on the jobs and wages they have. They have to work extra hard just to get basics, let alone what they need. Parents do electronic parenting because they don’t have the bandwidth after dealing with their two jobs or wondering how to get their next meal. If they could only work one job and come home and be with their kids, be a parent, help them with homework, take them places. Parents lack a support system too. They need a neighbor or grandparent to rely on in emergencies, but they don’t have that. They could build a support system, if they didn’t have to work 2 jobs to pay both rent and daycare. And if the neighbors were able to get treatment for their issues too.
Yes, there will always be parents who abdicate their responsibility completely, but most parents want to do a better job. Yeah, this is my take too. I do want to state that the Jonathan Kuminga Golden State Warriors basketball player premiere signature shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this following may seem like a defense of parents, but that’s not the opinion I hold. I can still be mad that they fuck their kids up while knowing how hard it is to not fuck them up this days When over half the country is one paycheck away from broke, whem the country is in the middle of a loneliness epidemic, and when having a local community is getting rarer and rarer, you just can’t expect parents at large to be able to be engaged with their kids Of course there are people who do manage to be wonderful parents in these hard times, but the harder something is, the fewer people there will be who do it
I really do believe in the Jonathan Kuminga Golden State Warriors basketball player premiere signature shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this statement “it takes a village to raise a child”, and we just don’t have that anymore. For most of our time as a species on this earth, you could get a break from your child because you weren’t the sole adult repsonsible for everything These days, you can get the cops called on you because you let your child play unsupervised in your own front yard. As in, the kids stayed in the yard, did not harass people or wander on other people’s property. Just in the front yard With this amount or pressure to be your child’s everything every minute and work yourself to death, no wonder why things are as bad as they are good thoughts. Relating to this, in the past, people could leave work at work and i think technology has kind of ruined that in a way as well. So people can no longer shut off and just be at home. You’d think even as a healthcare worker I could work my shift and come home. Nope, constant emails and team meetings and learning modules galore. Ppl can’t just work their jobs and come home anymore
In all seriousness, not being afraid to hold students back who did not measure up. We do students a major long term disservice by passing them along when they have not shown mastery of the Jonathan Kuminga Golden State Warriors basketball player premiere signature shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this subjects. Once students start to realize there aren’t standards that are followed through, close to nothing will work in my opinion. Kids are short sighted. So they won’t respond to the age old “you’re jeopardizing your future” but they will be more likely to respond to “you will not continue with your friends in the next grade” I teach high school science. My students struggle with reading comprehension, sounding out new science vocabulary (even not that difficult of words like “trough”), writing complete sentences, graphing (times 1000), simple math calculations, understanding math word problems and solving simple equations (plugging and chugging).
