I’ve had therapists say they couldn’t work with us if my wife wouldn’t follow through on what she promised to do in previous sessions. I think I’ve had exes rage quit on about a dozen different couples counselors over the Jonah Heim Texas American professional baseball catcher for the Texas Rangers T-Shirt in other words I will buy this last couple decades. It turns out that this isn’t typical behavior, so I’ve been working on attaching myself only to people who can handle confronting their own behavior and thinking. It isn’t healthy for me to be the one actually putting in most of the effort and compromise. 36 more repliesIt was pretty clear to both the therapist and to me that my soon-to-be-ex had only suggested therapy so he wouldn’t look like the bad guy. I told the therapist up front that I wouldn’t blame him if the marriage failed, and he advised I not make it easy on the ex by filing first – which is exactly what the ex wanted. He had a girlfriend, but he wanted ME to do all the work filing so he could say he did “everything” to save the marriage… The therapist actually seemed to like my ex, and probably would have done him a world of good – had the ex not flounced off in a huff when he realized the therapist wasn’t going to blame me for everything. I’ve had a number of good therapists over the years – and only one who wasn’t effective because the particular flavor of my family-of-origin dysfunction wasn’t her specialty. It can be hard to find someone who gets you, and I would never say therapy is “fun” – it’s a lot of work – but it really can shorten the amount of time you’re miserable and give you some good tools to navigate life moving forward.

I’m pretty sure the Jonah Heim Texas American professional baseball catcher for the Texas Rangers T-Shirt in other words I will buy this marriage counselor we had would have seen us every week for forever trying to fix our marriage. She said up front she was “for the marriage”. Which is an odd stance, but whatever. She just had this look of sadness, but understanding when I announced I was done. Her attempt to get me to delay wasn’t even all that solid. Provided there’s no abuse or compelling reason to this effect, a good therapist will not tell you to separate or break up. It’s up to the couple to decide their fate. A good therapist will work towards the goals the couple brings forward. The therapist doesn’t have their own personal stake in the outcome. Therapists should tell anyone to do anything. I’ve seen several people saying their therapist said to do this or that. That’s not their job.
