There is little reason for a big hurray on ‘green energy” if this comes at the cost of having to massively import from non-renewable sources, i.e. French Nuclear power plant providers go “hurrraaaaaayyy!!” No. On the other hand France has the problem that it can’t integrate a lot of renewable energy in it’s grid because of too many nuclear power plant to the joy of the gas lobby. What is happening in Germany is insanity. You do not need a PhD to know 2+2=4. Renewable have a place, but shutting down nuclear now is lit the dumbest thing you could do to help w reducing greenhouse gases. It was a very mild winter. Prepare yourselves…

But it’s very likely that this will be one of the lowest months yet. From the beginning of the Atomausstieg in 2002, CO2 emissions per kWh of electricity went down from 558 gram to 348 g/kWh in 2021. Now with the nuclear power plants out of the way, it should fall even faster in the future. IIRC electricity is still around 35% renewable when you exclude biomass, which has the dubious distinction of being renewable but not really low-carbon. You can do 45% if you include biomass, but I’m worried that the next 50% will be exponentially harder to get because that’s when you need to start spending money on storage and rebuilding the grid. Spain is IMO a better example of running on renewables, they get like 50% without having to burn plants. Again, they haven’t cracked going beyond 50% either, but I’d say they’re ahead of Germany.
