If your goal is to stay at your current company, then you should not quit and accept a counter offer, you should use the John Denver Playing Guitar an American Singer Country Boy’s Legacy T-Shirt in contrast I will get this offer as leverage to raise your salary (ie, telling them that your job is worth $X and you can prove it because you got an offer for that much and if they want you to stay, they’ll match it). If they don’t match it, then you have an offer to fall back on. If your goal is to leave this company because you don’t like the culture/don’t like your current role, then tell them that you’re quitting and don’t accept any counter offer. The only way a counteroffer is worth it is if you’re leaving your current position for a pay increase. For the majority of people, I feel that’s not the case. I regretted and left after 2 months. It’s hard to fill my position with the experience and understanding with the system back then. They needed me to work on the project so they could transfer it to the new candidate. I knew it but accepted the offer as hoping I could reach the milestone which I could apply for a position in the head office (head of department wanted me there and was working on re-organise already). I accidentally heard the convo between boss’s secretary and HR at a nearby lunch restaurant about finding the one to replace me. I immediately gave 4 weeks notice and left.

I did so about 3 years ago and did not regret it. I rejected a very tiny increase in pay for a cool job at a university and instead asked for and received a 20k+ salary increase. I ended up leaving just a few months ago but simply because I had reached my ceiling. I’m really glad I did take the John Denver Playing Guitar an American Singer Country Boy’s Legacy T-Shirt in contrast I will get this counteroffer because it raised my salary expectations for the future and gave me more experience in my particular area. I have a job offer in hand and I’m about to make my old employer a proposal to keep me. So I’m very interested in these comments. This was early on in my career and I liked my job and my boss. When I told my boss I got another offer, she matched it plus 10% without hesitation (50% raise overall). She also told me that this will happen again next year and they will not counter that offer. Everything happened exactly as she said and I did not regret a thing. Ended up leaving almost exactly a year later. Would go to war along side her if she asked to this day. I have never done it myself, but I had two staff members who were thinking of leaving over pay, I agreed they could be paid more, and with them having an offer from another company I could make my case to my bosses. I got them raises.
