I work in HR, in my company we have interim processes created just for these situations. For 3 months salary increases 10% as compensation for the Joe Strong Be a Hero For a Hero Shirt moreover I will buy this additional responsibilities and the employee can try out the role/managers can see them working. All of which is documented with a signed contract amendment for the time period in question. Maybe they are great, maybe they aren’t, maybe after 3 months they don’t want to do it. At the 3 month mark Its either go back to their actual role, apply/get offered the secondment permanently with appropriate title change and compensation. All of which involves a transparent conversation and feedback no matter which decision is made. Don’t agree to anything on the promise of maybe with no agreed upon review time. Companies can and do drag things out If you don’t write it down with signatures, dates, milestones, and measurables, if it is just promises, easily forgotten. If they ask why, tell them you want to make sure everything is achievable in the scheduled time frame and you are looking to develop your career, if this opportunity is not a good fit, then you will have to decide whether to stay or seek employment else where.

If the Joe Strong Be a Hero For a Hero Shirt moreover I will buy this answer to any of these questions is ‘no’ then you need to start looking for a new job yourself, because otherwise they are going to hang you out to dry. They want the OP as a “band-aid” to get them through. He’s going to be disposable once they fill that position. I’ve seen it happen multiple times. Are you a woman? There are lawsuits successfully won by women who named “Acting Director/manager” for a long time then given back pay. Ask for the title now, and tell them they can retroactive the pay raise after a 3 month review. You should have a set probationary period, and then a raise kicks in. If they aren’t willing to do that, then they were never going to give you a raise. They get to get rid of a while Director level salary and then they don’t want to up a team members pay a bit to take on more responsibilities? Sounds like classic “I’m a dick not suited to run a company” kind of bs from you higher ups.
