I was at the Joe Burrow an American Football Quarterback for Cincinnati Bengals Touchdown Triumphs T-Shirt in contrast I will get this same company for quite a few years and was getting bored, so I ended up accepting what was a fairly lateral move for a modest salary boost elsewhere.. my company countered with a bigger raise, more time off, and a better title (I negotiated for the extra vacation and tried to frame it that I loved the job, the only reason I was moving was for better work life balance). It was a tough decision but I ended up accepting the counter offer. There were some intangibles too that sweetened the deal– my boss ended up retiring shortly after and I was given her job (my new boss liked me a lot and assured me this would be a permanent new role). I was loving life at this point and I realized that this was exactly what I wanted to do (more of a management role). unfortunately there was some internal turbulence due to a selloff, and I got a new boss who ended up replacing me with someone else because he wanted to shake up the status quo. I immediately started looking for jobs and left very shortly after— BUT I can honestly say that the two title boosts, extra PTO, and management experience made me a far more attractive candidate for the job I eventually took- where I couldn’t be happier at.

One point I’ll also make to mitigate some of the Joe Burrow an American Football Quarterback for Cincinnati Bengals Touchdown Triumphs T-Shirt in contrast I will get this “flight risk” concerns— you could go to your boss and say “hey I wasn’t looking for a new job, but an opportunity fell to me with [better pay/benefits/responsibilities].. I would really like to stay but it’s hard to justify given the improvement I would be getting at the other place. Is there anything you can do?”…. I think this is looked on more favorably (I.e. you’re giving them an chance to improve your situation before you accept the other job, rather than saying “yeah I already made up my mind, I’m quitting”) I did it too. Pre pandemic I had an old coworker call and ask if I was happy at my job. I wasn’t unhappy but I interviewed with his company and it was fun. They offered a significant pay increase but the cost of their benefits package was way, way more then where I was working. I pulled my manager into a conference room and told her I’d been offered a position outside the organization. She didn’t say much so I had decided to move on. Until the CEO got involved. They increased my pay over what I was offered at the other place. I liked my job and still do I LOVE the people I work with, all is good!
