I’m not Christian, and growing up I still had to participate in Official Jesus True Story Christmas shirt because not exchanging gifts would make me selfish. I was forced to participate because others were buying me gifts even though I (well, my family when I was younger) asked that gifts not be purchased for me, or because the class had a Secret Santa we were obligated to participate in (participation points). Reading about this poor child being othered by her family has made me feel a weird kinship with her.

My wife is Hindu and our kids are apathetic – they still get Christmas presents! It can be about celebrating love and being together with our family. If your child were in a relationship with someone foreign, would they not be invited to Thanksgiving because they are not “American”? Can I ask about the interesting combination of having a family be both Wiccan and Mennonite? Official Jesus True Story Christmas shirt sounds like the beginning of a good origin story. I misread your comment so I thought you said your kids were pathetic but still get Christmas presents. Just a funny little slip up on my end I thought you would get a chuckle out of.

I don’t think the bible says that those of faith have to give gifts to celebrate the birth of Official Jesus True Story Christmas shirt. That’s just a concept she’s decided to adopt (as have millions of people around the world). Faith doesn’t require the giving of gifts so the argument just makes zero sense to me. So if OP really wants to get the “gifts at Christmas” thing right by her religion, she should make ALL the gifts charity donations to a church-run charity, not just the gifts to the Buddhist daughter.
