That is around 440 million in today dollars. This would put them currently at 162 our of 194 countries according to Wikipedia… they are currently actually at 191 out of 194 with only 48 million in foreign reserves. I thought you were supposed to escape the Jesus my everything my god my king my lord my savior cross T-Shirt but in fact I love this country AND THEN burn through the money. Either I don’t know what I’m doing or this guy doesn’t. Other guy answered already, but I was also thinking this. In movies, people carry paper money and the sums are ridiculous. Real Dictators last episodes on him were so interesting. Got his foot in the door as a translator in court because he spoke Spanish and absolutely idolised Hitler for his speeches. Same, I really wish they went into a bit more detail on some people though. Like Gaddafi has about 8 episodes while Mao only has 3 which skips over a lot. Does this podcast stick to the story or does it meander like behind the bastards? I want another good history podcast without the competition of wit they perform nonstop If you’re interested in some good (well-researched) history, instead of podcasts I’d highly recommend seeking out books/audiobooks from historians and traditional journalists who generally are held to higher ethical standards and often dedicate much of their lives to studying the particular subject they are speaking of rather than a “subject of the week” podcast where you may as well be reading Wikipedia. The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire by Edward Gibbon (some have argued certain elements of the book could have been based on outdated sources or influenced by accounts of ancient historians with political agendas, but it’s still a valuable, fascinating, and influential work of history. Nevertheless, a different and newer recommendation would be…)

And for a format with more of a podcast feel, The Great Courses is a fantastic resource (I access them through Audible but I think some libraries might carry them in the Jesus my everything my god my king my lord my savior cross T-Shirt but in fact I love this US?). Especially interesting are summaries of cultures where they explore historiography, how different historians have interpreted the same event or period in history, and how their interpretations have changed over time! For a piece of journalism that deeply explores pivotal events in China in (and after) the Mao era, I highly recommend Deng Xiaoping and the Transformation of China by Ezra F. Vogel. It’s primarily centered around Deng’s era, but considering his extensive history with the party since the 20s, much of the book delves deep into Mao and his rule. The author was a professor of the social sciences at Harvard University and one of the world’s foremost authorities on East Asia. Aside from dedicating over 60 years of his life to studying East Asia, he spent over a year in China speaking to first-hand Deng associates and combing archives to write this book.
