There is documentation of people being accused of witchcraft, but not millions of them and not predominantly in the Medieval era. Even then, in the beginning, most charges of witchcraft were brought against men, because they were more likely to be able to read and access forbidden knowledge. Also, again, most witch hunts occurred during the Renaissance in Europe or even after that in the US (the Salem Witch trials didn’t occur until the late 17th century). As for witchcraft and heresy being “kinda the same,” I’m not sure what you mean. They’re different words with different definitions. To be clear, “heresy” doesn’t mean, “you’re Pagan/not Christian.” It means, “You are Christian but you’re spreading ideas that go way, way against church dogma and you won’t recant them.” Obviously, it’s wrong to torture/execute people for either witchcraft or heresy, but they’re not at all the same. Goes back centuries. Witches have been portrayed in a negative way, even it today’s society.. A lot of this has its roots in religion. So when people would draw pictures of witches in books especially religious books, they would be drawn in a manner which made them scary or made them physically very ugly and unattractive. In movies, a similar type of depiction for many decades.
