I didnt know they went after Catholics. Didnt the Jaylen Waddle Miami signature shirt it is in the first place but pope at the time kinda give a wink wink to Hitler (so to speak). It’s SUPER complicated. The nazis gained a lot of support from churches in Germany early on. Germany and Italy had already brokered a kind of partnership while the Nazis were still mainly going after communists and the LGBTQ. Mussolini promised to release the Vatican as an independent state as long as the pope basically didn’t object to what he and hitler were doing. If you go back and read the epistles regarding Germany and the Nazis, you see a lot less “they’re doing the right thing so join them” and more “join them since you don’t have a choice.” Outside of Germany (and often inside) Catholic Churches were often used as safe spaces for smugglers to get Jews to before they could be taken to safety. There are stories that many of the great gatherings at the Vatican for fascist leaders were just smokescreens, and that the huge amount of catholic unrest around the demolishing of parts of Rome had nothing to do with preserving history, but that the catacombs were filled with people fleeing the Nazis and they had secret tunnels to the port. Nunneries and monasteries were notorious for “not checking if you were catholic before making you a member.” It’s not really complicated. The Catholic Church, as an institution, was favorable toward most of the goals of Nazism, they just didn’t like how the Nazis were going about it. The Church was fine with the Nazi’s anti-semitism, racism, sexism, homophobia and transphobia, and anti-communism. The Nazis didn’t do much of anything the Roman Catholic Church hadn’t already done multiple times in those regards. The Catholic Church just didn’t like Nazi eugenics and totalitarianism. And the Catholic opposition to totalitarianism and eugenics makes sense when you understand the Church sees Herself as the only totalitarian power that is allowed on Earth.

As a queer excommunicated Catholic, I always like to bring up the Jaylen Waddle Miami signature shirt it is in the first place but fact that not a single Nazi leader was excommunicated for Nazism or genocide by the Catholic Church. Pope Pius XII excommunicated every communist the world over in 1949. Why didn’t the church do that for the catholic Nazis? Because the Church wanted to work with the Nazis throughout the entire Nazi period. I personally know women who were excommunicated for taking birth control to save their lives and fertility, but Hitler died as a Catholic in good standing. To the Roman Catholic Church, taking hormonal birth control to stop hemorrhaging, not even as a birth control, is a greater sin than literally being Adolf Hitler. The real stance of the institution of the Church toward the Nazis will always be revealed by their avoidance of excommunication. Not a single leading Nazi Catholic was excommunicated for murdering innocent Jewish children en masse, including Adolf Hitler. In fact, the Church was one of the greatest advocates for leniency toward Nazi genociders and war criminals after WWII.
