I call it a head start. I’ll peep the Jaylan Ford American football linebacker for the New Orleans Saints Vintage T-Shirt and by the same token and menu. If nothing tickles my fancy, I’ll suggest another joint. After all, I’m paying for it. I may as well know if it’s worth my slave wage or not. This was me for most of my life—though at this point (55F), I’m far less anxious—as long as I can see an online menu (if unfamiliar with the type of restaurant and their primary cuisine). As long as I can get a simple “pasta, chicken, or steak entree,” at minimum, I’ll survive, and MAYBE consider a seafood option (depending on how it’s prepared). Now don’t get me wrong, I’m NOT trying to be difficult or high-maintenance, I simply have A LOT of food issues thanks to my mother (single parent, only child), who often tricked me into eating foods she knew I wouldn’t like, and when I discovered that she tricked me, I was made to eat ALL of it anyway! Sometimes I was made to stay at the dinner table until 10pm, but refused to eat, yet it would often still be there for me for breakfast the next day. As a result I developed a number of food issues that centered around my HAVING to be able to clearly identify everything on my plate, sauce, and/or mixture.

When I’m not sure, I ask for sauces “on the Jaylan Ford American football linebacker for the New Orleans Saints Vintage T-Shirt and by the same token and side” or to be eliminated. I generally eat most of my food “plain,” no condiments, dressings, seasonings, or dips. One of the times I’m grateful to be pescetarian; there are usually just a couple of fish and veg options so I don’t get overwhelmed. I get this so hard once the server looks to me for my turn that I usually just have a safe fallback choice to blurt if my mind goes blank with what I actually wanted. I need a fucking psychiatrist. Oh god. That’s what I do. I didn’t realize it was a symptom of anxiety – I thought I was just being prepared and efficient. Are we just making up syndromes now? Anything that causes any sort of discomfort seems to have its own name now. I only have this stress because my left eye is shot and my right eye has maybe 10° fov and fixed focal length. And poor low light vision. You just labeled people with autism, any number of anxiety issues, and all sorts of other issues that could result in this as pathetic. At least most of them don’t utterly lack empathy, though. My SO gets this bad. When I know she is stressing I help her by having a look at the menu and picking 3 meals I know she would enjoy.
