Autogenerated speech to text is nowhere near the level of “humans no longer required” because human speech and audio quality just has entirely too much variation in it. Anyone who has seen YouTube’s auto captioning knows exactly what I mean. We get paid a flat rate based on “per minute audio”, meaning the size of the audio, and that pay is determined by turnover, which is decided by the client. Meaning, no matter HOW BAD the audio is (static, horrendous background noise, bad microphones, thick accents) I get paid a flat rate. Example, 100 minutes of audio. At a 4-day turnover (meaning I have 4 business days before it’s due), that’s $0.75 per minute. Let’s say I get two of them. One has crystal clear audio with no noise and takes me maybe 4 hours to do. That’s $75 at 4 hours, so that’s $18.75 an hour. But the second file, the audio is bad, there is tons of noise, people talking over each other, speaker is barely understandable. Now that same 100 minutes takes me 12 hours to do. I’m still making $75, but now it is the equivalent of $6.25 an hour. Our turnover ranges from 4 days to 8 hours. Clients can demand outrageous editorial changes that we get paid nothing extra for. Also, we’re classified as independent contractors, meaning 15% tax rate and no benefits of any kind. I made about $17k give or take last year, working 12-16 hours a day, sometimes going as long as 36 hours without sleep to meet deadlines. Had to pay nearly $3k after filing my taxes (married filing jointly, so not an exact $3k).
