Stock buybacks increase value to every shareholder. The company doesn’t keep the stocks they buy back; they burn them. In doing so, every share left represents a larger percentage of ownership in the company. A lot of very wealthy people prefer this over dividends because those capital gains are unrealized, thus not taxed. That helps them because they can take out loans against those gains. Banks will offer extremely low interest loans exclusively to very wealthy people, and it’s not taxable income.

That is why I stay away from companies doing stock buybacks. It is a dirty scheme to boost payouts of execs (since most are paid in stocks to avoid paying taxes). Google is a growth stock.
