It’s not that they regret leaving exactly. It’s more like there are problems with beings born and raised in that type of dictatorship that don’t magically go away by simply getting out of the country. It probably has a lot to do with how non accepting and/or racist the south Koreans are. There’s nothing like escaping your hellhole country, making it to a first world country like South Korea, then all of the population hating you for it. That’s only 20% with regrets. Heck, in the USA we still have 30% that think the criminal trump was cheated out of the election!

Why do I suspect Reddit themselves just bot upvote these posts to promote their political agendas? I wouldn’t be surprised to be honest. They are not happy in North Korea, they still are not happy in South Korea. I doubt they can be happy anywhere. Seems like a really misleading article. So 20% have trouble. Is this not expected? Absolutely hilarious seeing some people in this comments try their hardest to excuse the racism/xenophobia in China/SK/Japan. So, despite being cut off from their families and friend and their decision endangering their families and friends and losing everything they know and had… over 4 out of every 5 still would make the same decision. This is a good example of using percentages to distort the story. The numbers are too small to have an accurate representation. About 60 people out of 300 that were interviewed expressed problems with the move. That’s not a very large sample. It’s like if a family of four moves somewhere and one teenage kid misses his old friends you can say 25% of those interviewed did not want to move. South Korea isn’t exactly a beacon of hope and opportunity. They’re still a very capitalist and somewhat conservative place. They are basically an immigrant in a place that’s quite xenophobic. Obviously they’re all koreans at the end of the day, but the cultural differences must be apparent. The more obvious things are mentioned in the article like feeling isolated which is expected since the uprooted their life People have a hard time putting themselves in the shoes of another, but I’m not surprised. South Korea isn’t exactly a great place to live either to be quite frank. Not to mention the casual racism they will experience and culture shock.
