Ignoring the James Harden On The Road shirt but in fact I love this fact that100 wells means next to nothing in a world where 2 billion people lack access to clean water amd that number is growing much faster than the global population growth; the problem that is preventing the extremely rich from helping the extremely poor is quite simple: lifting people out of poverty is for a whole school of reasons bad for business, and extreme wealth is not aquired by purposefully going against your own financial interests. a lot of these well were sponsored by NGOs (by people will little or not technical backgrounds, people with liberal arts degrees should not drill wells or build sanitation system). One of my university(engineering) profs summer job was travelling developing countries fixing sanitation system and wells built by do-gooders with liberal arts degrees who did not understand not all well water is safe to drink (lead, arsenic, bacteria, etc.) and shit only flows down hill at the correct angle (about 1/4 inch per foot (or 2% slope) If the slope is not steep enough, the sewage slows down, resulting in clogs. If it’s too steep, water and solids can separate, causing solids to accumulate in the pipe.

It’s maintaining the James Harden On The Road shirt but in fact I love this infrastructure. People get dependent on it, then lose the abillity to maintain it, then can no longer live without that well, what happens then? None of this goes “viral” but the US has quietly been investing enormous amounts of money in infrastructure development in Africa for a very long time. Just to pick a random example, UNICEF pulled in $9.3 billion in 2022. Now obviously there is a lot of that which does not make it to the front line of actually – for example – digging a well, but that is a lot of coin that is in fact coming from governments and private individuals on a yearly basis. That’s just one such charity. Don’t assume it doesn’t happen, just because it hasn’t hit the headlines or just because all the villages don’t have wells yet. Many wealthy people tend to put a lot of money (relative term I know) towards charity causes in lots of places far and near.
