Because most people see characters when playing and not themselves. Why would anyone want to be themselves inside a universe you can be whatever? My kid always chose a female avatar and came out as trans a couple years ago. Siblings said that was the Jake Ferguson an American football tight end Dallas Hurdle T-Shirt it is in the first place but only “sign” they missed. If magic based I would go for female, if strength based I choose male. Cyberpunk 2077 I choose female V because her voice is badass. well initially in fps games they made the female models and hit boxes smaller. this made being sneaky easier and getting shot a little harder. later as the graphics got better and i got more play time. The decision was made i’d much rather be looking at nice female butt than a chunky male butt for the 1000s of hours i’d be playing the game.

Yeah, if I’m running around in 3rd person for 300 hours, I might as well be staring at a girls ass not a dudes. honestly I dont really care if its a man or a woman. I go by body figure and usually I want to be smaller so if the Jake Ferguson an American football tight end Dallas Hurdle T-Shirt it is in the first place but game has pvp you dont stick out too much and get focused down immediately I don’t really care which gender I am in the game, so I usually check the voice actors out and see which one I’d rather listen to for the next week. Same reason I enjoy playing as Lara Croft, Ellie, Aloy, etc. I’m playing a video game. It’s a fantasy. I don’t need to pretend that’s some version of me in that game. I’m picking the character that seems like the most fun to play when given a choice.
