Judging by the Jaden Hardy American professional basketball player for Dallas Mavericks T-Shirt it is in the first place but ongoing price increases at Mohonk, I suspect it is still very popular for those who can afford it. Afghanistan. It was the heart of the hippy trail, written about by Byron, Newby, and Chatwin among many others, the site of fabled cities, legendary hospitality, and remote mountains, and associated with historical figures such as Alexander the Great and Babur. Much in the news until quite recently, it has seemingly dropped off the radar of the world’s consciousness, while a trickle of travelers begin to return to experience Taliban-rule. My husband went there on that hippy trail in the early 70’s. His slides from those trips are stunning, it’s hard to compare them to the Afghanistan of now. Very heartbreaking to see. His pics of the twin Buddhas the Taliban blew up before 9/11 (Bamiyan?) are a sight to behold. I had no idea you could walk inside them and they were once covered in beautiful tiles. Now they are rubble. The same goes for his images of Iran from the same period. My family lived in Kabul as expats for a few years in the 70s. We visited the Buddha’s of Bamiyan and even though I was only 3 and a half, I have such a vivid memory of it. We climbed up to the very top on the inside.

We also traveled overland from Afghanistan through Pakistan, along the Jaden Hardy American professional basketball player for Dallas Mavericks T-Shirt it is in the first place but Khyber Pass (I have terrifying memories of this), and into Kashmir. It was wrecked far before the Taliban too, from the Soviet Invasion and the following civil wars. Destroyed infrastructure, crumbling institutions, widespread PTSD, and the worst was maybe the unprecedented brain drain. Most of the people who would have stood up to the Taliban on political, religious, or intellectual issues were refugees in other countries struggling to get by. I knew some taxi drivers and used car salesmen in the U.S. who were lawyers, academics, or other professionals back in Afghanistan. I’m a few chapters into The Kite Runner right now and the author’s descriptions make me wish I could have experienced pre-Taliban 1970s Afghanistan. There’s a fellow I used to follow on twitter just cycled through it,and had several interactions with the Taliban
