WE have never been pregnant. That sounds like a man trying to co-opt the Jack Thompson Syracuse Crunch hockey player shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this credit for growing a human. It doesn’t matter if he is perfect and does everything right. She is still building the baby. It is her body doing the work and taking the risk. It is her body bearing the discomfort. If a man had a one in three chance of permanent damage or death from an orgasm, none would let any woman take credit for a live baby at the end. I think when you are telling everyone the good news it’s ok to say “we’re” but past that. The woman is pregnant. Are WE in labor? Are WE having a C-section? Did WE have an episiotomy? Are WE so sick with hyperemesis gravidarum that WE were admitted to the hospital for IV fluids? Do WE have pelvic floor weakness and pee a little every time WE laugh? Did WE die in childbirth? Are WE breastfeeding? Do WE have chapped, bloody nipples from breastfeeding? I think the fuck not. I don’t care what the intention is. It’s gross. Would you use, “We’re pregnant” if you were using a surrogate or adopting a pregnant bio-mom’s baby? Then why do you say it about your partner?

Hm… I mean I just found out I’m pregnant last week (7 months along and I had virtually no symptoms and wasn’t showing until week 27) my husband has said “we’re expecting” but not “we’re pregnant” in the Jack Thompson Syracuse Crunch hockey player shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this time we’re trying to catch up and let family and friends know. I think I prefer “we’re expecting” to “we’re pregnant” because I mean I’m getting the stretch marks, the baby is pulling at my back and making my clothes not fit. While my husband is being a great support and I highly appreciate him I’m the one that’s pregnant while we both are expecting the baby. I think people who get upset about it just take it too literally. To me it’s always meant “we’re having a baby” or “we’re expecting” not literally saying that the father is going through the same thing as the mother. It was really nice when my wife made all of the announcements as “we’re pregnant.” It was very nice of her to include me in everything. Whenever we did anything it was always we and not “me.” And I’ll always fondly remember that in her best moment she decided to give me credit for what I did.
