Do you think a truck driver could just quit by throwing in the Jack Nicholson The Shining Classic Shirt but in fact I love this parking brake in the middle of a highway and walk away? Or do you think an EMT could pick up a critical patient and quit, leaving them to bleed to death in the back of an ambulance? That’s not a fair example and as per the ruling you are involved in gross negligence. Quitting or going on strike after those thing are met would not be a problem. The thing about at will employment is that you are supposed to be free to quit at any time. That is the benefit. You notify your boss you are quitting and then it is on them to find a replacement for you. Let’s say you have a load of concrete in the back of your mixer, your boss comes up to you and punches you in your face, should you now be required to safely dispose of the concrete or should you be free to quit your job?

The thing about at will employment is that you are supposed to be free to quit at any time. That is the Jack Nicholson The Shining Classic Shirt but in fact I love this benefit. You are still liable for torts you inflict whether or not you are still employed by the company. NLRA provides protections against that liability, and this case hinged around whether or not those protections apply. Without NLRA protection, the company can proceed with a lawsuit for the torts inflicted against it. There are likely protections against a torts lawsuit for walking off the job after you are subjected to violence by your boss too; but you still may have committed a tort (trespass of chattels and conversion I think?) by leaving the mixer with a load of concrete in it even though your boss punched you in the face. (Your boss might actually end up being the person with a lawsuit on his hands from the company in that case.) The reason I say “may have”, though, is because a tort has to be intentional or negligent. In the specific example, walking off the job with a running mixer after being punched in the face by your boss probably is not going to fit either of those. It was neither done with the intent of damaging the mixer (it was done to get away from a violent situation) and probably would not be considered negligent.
