The side prong will pinch the roll. When replacing a new roll that is thicc, the side prong will make it wayyyy harder than it needs to be to roll out more than one sheet at a time. This method lets the roll actually roll then you put it in the hole when the roll is thinner. Or they’re just lazy. When I worked in a grocery store I’d do some Jerry Seinfeld-level observational standup in my head every time I walked down the paper towel aisle. You’re telling me 2 = 4 on this one, and 4 = 16 on that one? You do the math, we get 2 = 16! Might as well just grab the 2 then. Why bother? If you can make the existing thing work without any difficulty and it doesn’t affect the performance of the thing, keep it and spend your resources elsewhere. There is a myriad of situations where precision matters, this ain’t one.

The idea of the It’s Race Week In Las Vegas Grand Prix GP F1 Shirt and I love this roll like this isn’t just to hold the roll in place, it’s to allow it to spin so you can tear off pieces very easily. Like when you need the paper towels because your hands are gunked or wet. It’d be like getting a bunch of those clips to “hermetically” seal bags, but then putting them all in a box you need 2 hands to open. I’ve done something like this before (except much closer the the cardboard roll), it’s so you can tear off a paper towel easily with one hand while you have something spillable in the other and can’t do the quick jerk. I find I pretty much never need the roll to slack much if at all when it comes to paper towels, so I’d rather not have it keep fucking spinning when I’m trying to get a single sheet. Yeah, you can do the downward tear, but that’s about as awkward as the lightning pull to tear a single sheet off one-handed.
