“Travel isn’t always pretty. It isn’t always comfortable. Sometimes it hurts, it even breaks your heart. But that’s okay. The journey changes you; it should change you. It leaves marks on your memory, on your consciousness, on your heart, and on your body. You take something with you. Hopefully, you leave something good behind.” Solo traveler here. My husband of almost 10 years has only accompanied me on my travels once (and it was to go visit my family for Christmas one year) and I have no friends ) since I moved from Southern California to Southern Ontario for my partner. So far I have traveled to Italy and Australia as a solo female. I had a 2 day layover in Hawaii too if you wanna count that. I absolutely love traveling solo. My partner has problematic feet and a general disinterest in travel. I grew up traveling the It’s okay to eat fish cause they don’t have any feelings shirt and I love this U.S. with my family for the majority of my childhood, so travel is not really new to me BUT the way we traveled was via car and a trailer of which I can’t really tolerate well as I get motion sickness. I now travel whenever I get the chance. I’ve been to Australia 3 times now, and Italy once. I love getting to do the things I want to do, see, eat, and so on. I used to hate traveling with my family because it was impossible to get to do the things I wanted. I was always forced to check out national parks as a kid though which I was extremely disinterested as a kid but have come to appreciate now as an adult. I’m very much a scenery person. I prefer checking out gardens, beautiful landscapes, museums, and so on.

I usually save up money throughout the It’s okay to eat fish cause they don’t have any feelings shirt and I love this year having a budget in mind. I actually applied for a working holiday visa last year and activated it on my last trip to Australia but unfortunately some stuff happened and my partner and I had to move and with that impending move ultimately I wasn’t able to make it back out before my visa expired. Bummer. Check out the working holiday visas for a country you would be interested in. Somewhere they don’t speak english might be hard but it would be the experience of a life time and it allows you to pay for your trip so you don’t have to save up as much! I grew up extremely shy! Like hide behind my mom at age 17 if a stranger at the grocery store talked to me, shy. Solo travel allowed me to open up and improved my confidence exponentially. My first trip was post high school graduation when I went to go meet my partner the first time. I nearly missed my flight. Since then I have been on airplanes atleast once a year and its the only time I feel truly at home and comfortable and happy. Not to say I’m not happy around my partner but I have a lot of mental illnesses and the shakeup in scenery and excitement from traveling to a new place really bursts the rut I fall into with my depression an anxiety for a while and I feel normal atleast while traveling since I don’t need to worry about anyone except myself.
