The issue isn’t that South Korea isn’t much better than North Korea, it’s that it’s an incredibly large change in lifestyle. I have trouble sleeping at night. The bed is too big. I have bad dreams, like I’m falling. I wake up scared. Sometimes it takes me a while to remember where I am. There’s a lot of people that miss being in prison after they are free because everything is so different and normal things become a challenge. I think that’s completly normal. I can’t imagine what it must be like for a N.Korean integrating into S.Korea or any capitalist/free-market country. All of us who grew up in say…North America, Europe, and even China were born, bred, and taught how to struggle and compete in order to earn our place in society. We’re taught how to seize opportunities, exploit weaknesses, and defend/avoid scams.

The idea of an individualistic dog-eat-dog world where you’re on your own is completely foreign to N.Koreans. No wonder they’d be eaten alive. I have read that North Koreans have a bit of difficulty understanding the It’s not an addiction until you’ve s’ed dick for it shirt in addition I really love this South Korean language. Korean language in the north stopped changing when they became a separate country. In the south, the language kept changing. The Korean language nowadays is sprinkled with english words, as well as modern concepts. I understand the stress and challenges of adjusting. However, 4 in 5 do not. If you arrive at a new nation where the existing citizens have their own struggles and hardships that they have already been bearing, I wonder how much of such feeling of isolation is truly unique to the new immigrants. South Korea is a small but an extremely competitive economy. Coming from a communist system. It would be a huge culture shock.
