I mean, if a person working on a degree, racked up debt and paid it off but stuck in a hole. Why shouldn’t they be repaid for what they paid? What’s the It’s A Connolly Thing You Wouldn’t Understand Name T-Shirt in contrast I will get this difference between someone who did what they were supposed to, worked hard and paid it off vs someone that didn’t. I know my views are counter to politics, but I don’t get it. Shouldn’t they have just as much right to be paid back, as someone that never made the effort or couldn’t change their lifestyle enough to? I get that there are a million scenarios that play out in their circumstances but many do pay them off. Aren’t they due the same thing if not more, as they actually did eat ramen and work hard to pay things off? I made specific decisions around education knowing the long-term ramifications. I was conservative knowing that I wouldn’t want to live under the burden of loan debt for most of my life, so I went to a State college instead of a private college subsidized by some scholarships and incentives. Spending on the State school just made more sense in the long term. Also learning that I wasn’t able to get into a top-25 law program, I opted not to go to law school at an over-priced b- or c-tier school because I was dead set on practicing law. I made all those decisions with debt in mind, and I paid off my student loan debt within 5 years of graduating.

I went to school with plenty of peers who took out exorbitant loans for soft/pointless degrees that they’d never use. These were the It’s A Connolly Thing You Wouldn’t Understand Name T-Shirt in contrast I will get this same folks using loans to go on trips, buy random shit, etc. These were the clearly irresponsible people on my campus. I pointed out that he had open heart surgery on Medicare, and the cost of it was hundreds of thousands. How is that fair to other people that have never had to have an expensive lifesaving surgery? He didn’t really want to discuss it any more after that. Let’s put it this way, the people who responsibly payed their students loans are getting shafted by the people who did not pay their loans. If you paid 10k in students loans and another person avoid their payments or took more than 10k it would feel really shitty knowing that you could’ve also taken that 10k and done something else with it knowing that they would be forgiven.
