It’s very unfortunately true. It happened in January of this year. The hospital was fined $75,000 and they chose to close their maternity ward citing costs and declining community demand. The next closest maternity wards are nearly an hour away. It is illegal for a lawyer to reach out to injured parties to offer to take the case in all 50 states. It’s considered solicitation and they can be disbarred. However. I doubt this family would send an attorney away who offered to represent on contingency. Just saying it’s not legal to contact injured people if you’re a lawyer. It is insane how much fear doctors must put into nurses. My wife was giving birth and our nurse was amazing helping her get started. She was legit one big push from our son being born. The nurse literally said “oh my let’s stop pushing now and wait for the doctor otherwise he will get mad”. Legit had to wait 10 minute for him to pop in my wife to do one more push and our son to be born just so he wouldn’t be mad. Was pointless and my wife was just horribly uncomfortable for 10 minutes. I don’t know if doctors treat their nurses like shit or put fear in them or what but it’s nuts.

If you live in the US, we as citizens are paying roughly twice the average healthcare cost of other countries with public healthcare. The US has one of the highest infant and mother mortality rates compared to other wealthy nations. If you’re Black / Brown or live in the South or Rust Belt – you’ve got even worse odds for infant or maternal mortality. Thanks for the links! On a side note….I’ve never heard of what I’m assuming is the bible belt referred to as the Zeus Belt? My 4th delivery and it was totally different than the other 3. I was having major pain before my water broke. Went to the hosp. and they monitored me for awhile. The nurse called the on call doctor who said to send me home. I begged her that I shouldn’t be sent home. I was having contractions 1 min apart. I said: Call my doctor. She said she would get in trouble if they called him. We left, my husband drove a couple miles then back to the hosp. My water broke in the elevator. When the door opened, I said: you can’t discharge me! My water broke! They had to call an emergency room doctor who was wearing dress pants, dress shirt & nice shoes. He was washing his hand when I said: just come over and catch the baby. This happened about 10 mins after water breaking. To make a long story a little longer, when I told my doctor what happened 2 days later, he called a meeting and apparently yelled at everyone. Told them I was a seasoned mother and if something wasn’t right / different than the last 3 births, they NEED to listen to the mother because something could’ve been horribly wrong. The doctor on call left the practice within the month. I feel like I had something to do with that.
