Take your gatekeeping elsewhere. A few years back, I was brought to the hospital in handcuffs for an involuntary 2 week stay. I told them over and over again every damn day that my problems were situational. Drawing pictures, talking about my feelings, and taking lithium was not going to put my family back together. Failing that, it still wasn’t going to get me a better paycheck or affordable housing. I kept telling them that I wasn’t there voluntarily and they’re wasting their time as they can’t fix my problems and since they couldn’t then I absolutely refuse to pay them. Of course they only selectively listened. They didn’t give two shits about the root of my problems and said that I wouldn’t have to worry about payment since insurance would cover it or the state would since the stay was involuntary. Sure enough, a few weeks after I “got better” and left, I get a giant bill in the mail. I never paid it.

This is just idiotic. I understand what they were aiming for, but it’s in horrible taste. Yes, financial burden and work conditions can affect mental health. You know what else can? Trauma. Physiological conditions. Things that are completely unrelated to your job. And believe it or not, some people do require medications, even if they are stable in life, to help their mental health. Shockingly, medications aren’t meant to fix poverty; they’re meant to fix medical conditions. Wild concept. Cool, love seeing this message of hopelessness when I’m already down. I feel like posts like this deter people from getting help even when they may need it in some capacity.
