What was it that kept you pushing forward to live? Was it the It Doesn’T Get Eddie Vedder Than This Shirt and I love this same as others? How did you continue to believe there was hope? Can I give you a hug? Thank you for your bravery and courage. I was at the holocaust museum in Israel this year. I listen to a Survivor give her message with tears in my eyes. At the end, I followed her and asked to give her a hug. She said yes and was a special moment for both of us. Love conquers all, even hate! Thank you for doing this and I appreciate what might be one of the few remaining opportunities to talk with an actual holocaust survivor. Before I get to my question, there is a story that I would like to share with you. My grandfather was a communist and fled Germany in 1933. When I was a kid, he told me how he returned to Germany a few weeks prior to May 1945, and how he came to a train station where, a few hours earlier, an allied bomb had hit the tracks and Jews who were locked in the train cars destined for concentration camps in the East had used the opportunity to try and escape. My grandfather told me that he met a conductor, a regular civilian, who bragged to him how he himself shot several escaping Jews, one of whom was on his knees begging for his life.

This is something that has stuck with me. In the It Doesn’T Get Eddie Vedder Than This Shirt and I love this historical retrospective, it is difficult to fathom the depths of human cruelty. From today’s perspective, it just seems incomprehensible. So my question is: how did you manage to move on, having seen the absolute worst of what human nature has to offer? And did you find a way for yourself to keep some measure of faith in human goodness, despite having been confronted with what we cannot describe as anything but pure evil? Did you find some kind of light for yourself? How do you feel about the rise of the far right in recent times and all the conspiracy theories surrounding what happened in WW2 Germany to Jewish people? How do you feel about the steps that Germany has taken when it comes to Nazi speech and symbols? As someone who knows many Jewish people, I’ve seen their hatred of Germany till this day and wanted to know how you feel all these years later as someone who lives through those horrors. Hello Mr. Lesser, while your and everyone else’s experience in the concentration camps must’ve been absolute horror, I wonder whether you remember any particular instances of humor and happiness. Did you ever share profound laughter and joy with anyone during your time in the camps?
