Going for a run in the winter when it’s 20F but the sky is crystal clear blue, or on a dreadfully humid summer day, or on a warm, dry day in the autumn with yellow and orange leaves, is to experience the seasons. Running alone on a trail through the woods or in the mountains is to experience the terrain. Feeling wiped out after a hard fought two hour tennis match, or after a marathon, is to feel the drama of our body and life, of success, of vowing to do it again. To run for an hour with a good friend on Saturday morning, talking so that time is forgotten, enjoying coffee afterwards, is to experience kinship. To mountain bike a sweet trail, nailing the corners, is to feel zen. Road racing in a hushed peloton, working together and against each other, flowing through the curves as one, is to dance silently.
