In my case, I was in labor with my 4th child. I knew what to expect because I’d done it before and never had any complications. My partner and I were relaxed and joking with the staff and nurses. They came in to place my epidural and that’s where things went sideways. Long story short: they injected air into my cerebrospinal fluid and didn’t believe me that something was wrong. The pain was debilitating and the anesthesiologist and even my OB didn’t believe me. I fully believed I was going to die and told my partner so. My OB threatened to kick me out of the hospital b/c I wouldn’t “cooperate”. My nurse was great tho, she reported everything to the charge nurse and had a neurologist evaluate me. He was able to give me meds for the pain so they could get the baby delivered. The shame was obvious on my OBs face when the CT clearly showed my spine and head were full of bubbles. I’m not a minority and have a bachelor of science. I’ve spent years working with medical providers as a caregiver for a pediatric cancer patient. I really didn’t think I would ever be dismissed when I complained about something in a healthcare environment. I had always been listened to until I wasn’t. If it can happen to me, it can happen to anyone. I currently have a medical malpractice suit pending against the hospital.

Man I’m sorry. Yeah my dad is a doctor and my grandma and my cousins are all nurse practitioners and doctors. But the ER doctor saw that I was heavily tattooed and made an assumption even though I had a medical file that read like a dictionary. Childbirth is basically one of the most dangerous ‘natural’ things a woman can do in their life, and made worse if you’re unlucky enough to do it in the US. Not only do doctors/medical professionals not listen well to women, they particularly don’t listen well to people of color. Which is why so often shit like this happens—and then a chorus of folks who don’t have this experience chime in and victim blame and say oh that wasn’t my experience! Maternal care is a shit show and it can make it harder for some to seek medical treatment, which makes the experience even more risky! Serena Williams nearly died in childbirth because they didn’t believe that she had blood clots! (She’d had them before and recognized the symptoms.) If she struggled to get adequate medical care, what hope does anybody else have?? The price for delivering a baby in the US is about 50,000 dollars….and still you’re not allowed to talk to a doctor when you can’t feel your legs? Lol Fr. For that kind of money, there should be an oiled up person feeding me grapes while I lounge on a tufted settee.
