The roots of felony disenfranchisement in the United States can be traced back to the Reconstruction era after the Civil War. During this period, Southern states implemented laws aimed at suppressing the political power of Black Americans, including those who had been convicted of crimes. These laws were later upheld by the Supreme Court, setting a precedent that allowed states to disenfranchise felons indefinitely.

Today, felony disenfranchisement laws continue to have a devastating impact on communities across the country. According to the Sentencing Project, over 6.1 million Americans are disenfranchised due to felony convictions. This means that they are denied the fundamental right to vote, crippling their ability to influence policies that affect their lives and their communities.
