And then, something clicked. Beyond hearing my voice echoed back to me over and over again on Zoom, my motivation to “do something” about it ran deeper. Recently, I noticed that our 6th grade daughter had been trying out a new tone at home—high, clenched and sweet, with the I’m The Nicest Asshole You’ll Ever Meet Shirt so you should to go to store and get this words clipped tight; Little Miss Clever, with a touch of mischief. To escape old patterns, I would need a physical foundation. So I signed up for online classes with Jean McClelland, a master of the I’m The Nicest Asshole You’ll Ever Meet Shirt so you should to go to store and get this Alexander Technique, an early-20th-century physical practice designed to support stage performers. Jean, with her contagious love of physiology and an obsession with the psoas muscle, teaches voice to Columbia University theater students. Her approach requires minute awareness, allowing the breath to lift sound from below through an easy, open throat. Like an intricate yoga move, once you’ve got it, it feels incredible. My favorite Jean exercise is called “whispered ah.” “There’s a difference between trying to open up—ahhhhhh,” she explains on a recent Zoom, pausing to let out a rasping silent scream, “or just opening up and inviting a whispered ah to arise.” Her next sustained “ah” floats gracefully like a light wind blowing through the trees as she circles a hand, conducting, coaxing it along with lyrical enthusiasm. “Then the lips close and reflexive inhalation occurs,” she goes on in her lilting Broadway clip. “Enjoy it. Feel the coolness come into the nostrils. Mmmm. It’s like the best drink in the world.”
